Play-Doh!!

Posted on April 30, 2020 at 11:03 AM by Tiffany Miller

Good Morning!!

One of my favorite things to play with as a kid was Play-Doh. Who can forget that weird salt smell as you made different shapes and sizes. You could make different objects or mix the colors. They had those amazing pieces that went with the sets. You could be a chef or a hair stylist. Play-Doh was a great way to use your imagination and create amazing things.

Play Doh History – helenatkn
Did you know that Play-doh was invented by accident?? In the 1930's, Noah Mcvicker was working at a soap factor and was working on a new wallpaper cleaner. It looked like putty and didn't contain any harmful chemicals. It was reusable and didn't stain walls, but he had no idea how to use it. Teachers found a way to use the wallpaper cleaner at school. they realized it was great for making art and crafts projects. Students could shape the soft material with their hand and create object and then let it dry. Years later the renamed the product and started marketing it to schools and department stores. Although the recipe is a secret, I have ways that you can make you own at home. Even edible Play-doh that's safe and delicious.

Play-Doh:
1 cup of flour
1/2 cup of salt
1/2 cup of water
food coloring
Place the flour and salt in a bowl and slowly add the water. Mix as you go. If you find that the mixture is to dry add a little bit of water. If the mixture is to wet, add more flour. Once you have your dough you can separate it and add a few drops of food coloring to make different colors. To keep it from drying out, you can place it in a ziplock bag. You can store the Play-doh in the refrigerator to make it last longer. If your kids made a sculptor that they cant live without, you can back the dough and it harden for you to keep. This recipe last for 4 weeks.
Baking Instructions:
Bake the dough at 200 F until hard. The amount of time depends on the size and thickness. This pieces might take 45-60 minutes, thicker pieces might take 2-3 hours. Check the pieces in the oven every 1/2 hour or so until they are hard.

Here are a few different ways to make some edible play-doh with ingredients that you probably have at home. Each of them have the same steps. Just mix all together until you have the right consistency.  The Peanut butter one is my favorite!!
Edible Play-doh:
Kool-aid playdough: 2 Cups Flour 1/4 Cup Salt 1 Pack of Kool-Aid 1 Cup Warm Water 1 1/2T Oil
Jell-O playdough: 2 Cups Flour 1/4 Cup Salt 1/2 Pack of Jello 1 Cup Warm Water 1 1/2T Oil
Peanut Butter playdough *Allergy Caution* Peanuts Involved: 1 C Peanut Butter 1/2 Cup Honey 2 Cups Powdered Sugar
Play-doh is such a fun way to get creative and have some fun. It keeps the kids entertained and they might just make you something special for Mother's Day. Make sure you tag us with what you make on our ERC Facebook page. Have a awesome day!!
