National Superhero Day!!

Posted on April 28, 2020 at 11:22 AM by Tiffany Miller

Good Morning!!

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's...National Superhero Day!!! I love superheroes. I love that they make it easy to connect with. Someone who may seem kinda ordinary turns out to be extraordinary. It makes you feel like even you can become a hero. They have great stories of how they got their powers and used them to defeat evil. There are so many amazing hero's that it's hard to pick a favorite. I love seeing kids dress up as their favorite hero for Halloween. Their eyes light up when you call them by the superhero name such as Spiderman, or Batman. In their eyes they are that hero and they want to save the day.

Each year on April 28th, National Superhero Day honors superheroes, both real and fictional. Batman, Superman, Captain America, Wonder Women, Iron Man, Hulk, and Spiderman are just some of the superheroes whose names are recognize. Even though they are fictional, these superheroes are great role models for our children. They serve and protect while fighting evil.

Our real-life superheroes may not have superpowers or wear capes, but they are also great role models who serve and protect while fighting evil. Military personnel, police officers, firefighters, and teachers are just a few of the heroes who protect us on a daily basis. With the COVID-19 pandemic we have seen lots of heroes with no capes step up and fight on the front lines for our safety. People are standing and clapping with appreciation for those you are risking their lives to help stop this virus. What an amazing way to honor those heroes.

In honor of superhero day I thought it would be awesome to celebrate in some fun ways.
Wear a Costume:
It's so much fun to dress up and use your imagination. Have your kids dress up like their favorite hero and go for a walk. Even if they dress up like a nurse or firefighter. As you walk you can pretend you are saving the world.

Make a mask or cape:
You can have your kids make a mask or cape and decorate it. Being able to design their own cape or mask helps them to use their imagination and its something they can keep and play with for a while.

Make up a new Superhero:
One of my favorite activities I have ever done with kids is let them create a new hero. We had everything from First Aid girl who would give everyone bandaids to Super-fan who would run around and cheer everything someone would do. Have your kids create a new superhero. Something original and unique. Have them draw out their hero or create a costume for it. This helps them use their imagination and have fun.

There are lots of fun ways you can celebrate today. Whatever you do make sure you take some time to thank a hero. Face-time someone you know and tell them thank you. Make some signs for your yard for the medical staff and first responders that are keeping us safe. There are lots of heroes out there who step up in amazing ways to fight for us. Take some time to talk to your kids about what makes a hero. Not only fictional and first responders, but someone who picks up trash for our planet is a hero. Someone who lets someone go in front of them in line is a hero. Being kind is heroic. We can all be heroes and save the world just by being kind. Make sure you tag us on our ERC Facebook page with your ideas or costumes. Have a great day fighting evil and saving the day!! Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary. ~ Gerard Way
