Youth Basketball

Dribble and shoot your way to fun and excitement in our Youth Basketball Program for boys and girls. The goals of this program are to teach basic skills, good sportsmanship, and the ability to perform as a member of a team. This program will reinforce the following concepts: dribbling, passing, shooting, and offensive and defensive skills. The main emphasis of this program is an ongoing effort to continue skill development in all levels of this program in a FUN, LEARNING environment. There will be boys and girls divisions.


Grade: 3rd & 4th - Mon. & Wed. / 5th & 6th Tues. & Thurs.

Instructional Basketball

This program provides an opportunity for girls and boys to learn the game of basketball under conditions favorable for their age.This is program will reinforce dribbling, passing, shooting, offensive and defensive skills.This program will be set up in two 45-minute sessions per week for the first half of the season. The last half teams will be formed and a league schedule will be handed out for games.


Grade: 1st and 2nd graders

Location: Riverside Elementary Gymnasium


Start Smart Basketball teaches children, ages 3-5, basic motor skills necessary to play organized basketball while they work one-on-one and spend quality time with their parents. The program focuses on teaching children and their parents basic sports mechanics without the threat of competition or the fear of getting hurt. Sessions are held once a week for six weeks. Each week the exercises become increasingly more difficult as the class progresses and the children show improvement. A parent or significant adult must attend the class with the child. Classes will be held on Wednesdays. Each child receives a free mini basketball.


Age: 3 - 5 year olds

Gymnastics

This eight lesson program is designed to familiarize beginners with basic gymnastics skills while building confidence, coordination, and self esteem. These classes will reinforce skill development, body alignment, balance, and strength. Development of these to more advance skills is an ongoing process in our program. This class will meet on Saturday mornings.

Age: 5 - 7 & 8 - 12 years olds

Tumbling Tots

Tumbling Tots provides your child with an opportunity to enjoy socializing and interacting with children their own age. Balance, muscular coordination, and motor skills development are taught.

Tournament Challenge

March Madness is here and another NCAA Champion will be crowned. Do you have the skill and knowledge to pick the winner? Stop by the Emporia Recreation Commission and pick up an official NCAA Tournament Bracket, fill it out and return it by 3/19/09. Prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finalists. The only thing its going to cost you is your pride. Only one tournament bracket per person. Points will be updated every Monday. Please pick a final score for the championship game. Final game score will be used in case of a tie. Call or see Amanda for more information.
